Love that first sentence! It sets up a whole mesh of associations and memories for me. Also like how you describe the shoe polishing kit.
These snippets are so thought provoking for just a few lines. The descriptions of 'Purple Martin' and his friends read like the sort of book I wouldn't be able to put down! ...x (Oh and I had red leather Clark's shoes too!)
